Northern Bobwhite Quails - Birds - Reproduction

Northern Bobwhites have been mistakenly considered monogamous birds for many years. It is acknowledged now that they can mate with more than one partner. The breeding season starts in early spring, the climax being in May-July. The brood averages 12-16 eggs that are of cream color. The incubation period is 23 days. Not very deep, the nests are covered with leaves and grass and can be located in fencerows and roadsides. It is interesting to know that both males and females raise the young.

A few hours after the young have been hatched, they can leave the nest with their parents. The first few weeks are the most dangerous for the brood. It is estimated that up to about half of the brood may die by the fall. Yet, those chicks that are lucky to survive have to learn to fly. They do it successfully by the age of three weeks old. By the age of fifteen weeks old, the chicks are almost identical to their parents.

Generally, Northern Bobwhite Quail are very adaptable. There is some evidence that abandoned chicks at the age of 21 days old can survive without any care from their parents.

Northern Bobwhite Quails - Birds - Farm Raising

Chicks can be raised on a farm. Breeding of Northern Bobwhites is now a profitable business. For a breeder to be successful, there are some aspects that should be taken into consideration when starting the business. The quality of the brood depends on many factors, such as a good breeding stock, and appropriate care and maintenance. If breeders devote much attention to these issues, they will profit by raising Northern Bobwhites.
