Northern Bobwhite Quails - Birds - Pictures
Northern Bobwhite Quails - Birds - Did You Know? The history of some American states is closely connected with northern Bobwhites. These game birds rather common in the United States and popular with hunters were the candidates for adoption a few times. Thus, Georgia adopted the Northern Bobwhite Quail as the official game bird in 1970. Prior to this event, the species had to stand the rivalry with the brown thrasher. This bird was declared the symbol of the state in 1935. Years later, the drawings of the Northern Bobwhite by Mark Trail gave impetus to supporting the species as the official bird of Georgia. At the end, both the brown thrasher and the Northern Bobwhite were adopted. The state became known as the "Quail Capital of the World."However, this title did not protect the species from population decline. There were great numbers of the Northern Bobwhite Quail due to low intensity of agriculture practices at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. However, by the second half of the 20th century, the population of the Northern Bobwhite Quail declined rapidly in Georgia. A similar situation was in Tennessee. The Northern Bobwhite Quail lost the "battle" for the state bird title in 1933. The Mockingbird became the official bird of the state. Nevertheless, the Northern Bobwhite received its share of acknowledgement in 1988. It was adopted as the official game bird of Tennessee. Yet, the population size did not grow despite the protected status of the species. Significant habitat losses and a poor quality of existing habitats have diminished the numbers of Northern Bobwhites greatly.
